Memory Lane
A couple of days ago, I took a trip down memory lane.
It was a long overdue visit, and I wanted to know how you were doing.
You seemed different. You have changed.
But, you still remembered me.
Your smile took me back there, like it was a time machine.
Now I'm thinking about the books that you read to me.
How you comforted me when I was on the giant swing.
Do you remember the trips we had?
The silly games of dress-up, and playing pretend.
I remember how innocent I was.
I thought that everything would fix itself.
I trusted power,
and I didn't know that it could be evil.
A party meant a celebration.
A war was a game we all played.
Villains never took power,
because there was a hero to save the day.
I never thought that, maybe, that hero might have to be me.
Magic isn't real. There is no spell or potion. Problems aren't solved that easy.
I had the most beautiful dreams.
My heart shatters when I think of them.
But, I hope you're proud of me.
I'm no longer scared of balloons.
I've seen so many more movies.
I'm a much better writer,
and I'm learning to speak my mind.
This world is broken, but I'm gonna try my best to put it right.
I'm so much more than that little girl.
I've grown up, and I'm now living my life.
